Untitled (spiral),
the Performance Space
Cast paper, steel cable, alligator clips
Davies’ piece ascends above the ceiling into the gallery skylight … (the) wire strings are symbolic of the generally secret substructure of all building and construction. Untitled (spiral) is a neat juxtaposition between the upward force created by the lightness of the paper … and the wire which gives the impression of holding the stairs down whilst of course holding them up. The delicacy of the object frustrates the ‘natural’ desire to use the stairs in their ‘natural’ way – no feet can touch these ‘stairs’ and the skywell is left as inaccessible as ever.
